1. Healthy nutrition – nutritional psychology

You can find countless articles about healthy nutrition everywhere. As a rule, the amount of the so-called “macronutrients”, i.e. carbohydrates, fats and protein, is the main focus. People often mistakenly talk about the harmfulness of fats, grains or dairy products and very rarely discuss the quality of food. This is explained in more detail in the article “Natural food vs. industrial food”.

One thing that is completely missed in articles about healthy eating, however, is the way we eat and the time and attention we give to our food intake. One could use the term “nutritional psychology” for this.

2. Wrong nutrition psychology – explanation

Watching the news, videos on Facebook or YouTube, working on the side or simply answering the Whatsapp messages during dinner.

Why exactly you should not do that under any circumstances, and why so many people do it during the meal anyway, will be explained in this article.

You can develop some bad habits in life. One of the worst is probably doing a thousand other things at the same time while eating. But what exactly is so bad about it and what is the motive for doing it anyway?

3. Consequences of wrong nutritional psychology

1. Sensory abilities degrade

Having good sensory skills requires that we use them consciously.

But how are we supposed to taste, smell, and see what we’re eating if we’re looking at the latest posts on Instagram the whole time?

2. Food is not chewed properly

One of my most important nutrition rules is: chew your food properly!

Some people already find it difficult to chew their food properly. This effect is even stronger when we do several things at the same time.

Not chewing your food properly leads to reduced nutrient absorption, poor digestion and a much higher risk of stomach ulcers and stomach cancer.

Even healthy alkaline foods can become acidic foods due to this unconscious way of eating. The consequences are devastating.

3. Social interaction is disturbed

Some families have long since stopped eating meals together. The fact that the kids are playing on the console with their supper comes in handy, so you can watch the daytime news in peace.

And where people still eat together, smartphones are often at the dining table.

At least one meal together daily should be mandatory. Joint discussions are absolutely desirable.

Tablets, smartphones and running TVs, on the other hand, disrupt social interaction.

4. It is a waste of time

Have you ever asked yourself what would happen if you first took your food in peace and then continued to work, instead of doing both at the same time?

That’s right, it wouldn’t take any longer in the end. Both good nutritional intake and the ability to work effectively need our focus.

Eating while working distracts us, even if unconsciously. A twenty percent reduction in our ability to think is already quite enough for us to no longer solve complex tasks and simply too many errors occur, which end up costing more time.

5. It would be a deserved pause for thought

From the time we get up to the time we go to bed, our minds are permanently flooded with external information. In doing so, we have to dream deeper and deeper in order to somehow still halfway process this information.

Due to this permanent flood of information, we can no longer think clearly and the ability to solve tasks independently is almost completely lost.

Meals here can be a well-deserved pause for our minds to think. As a side effect, solutions for very complex tasks often suddenly come to mind. When we return to work after such a break, we are usually much more motivated, efficient and focused.

6. We unconsciously eat unhealthier

If we are constantly distracted while eating, we eat much more unhealthily. If, on the other hand, we focus more on food again, we choose food much more consciously and healthily, incorporating our sensory abilities.

We suddenly register again when food is disgustingly sweet, totally salty, possibly slightly spoiled or when the carrot simply does not taste like a carrot.

7. Loss of zest for life

Let’s think back to the Stone Age people. For a successful hunt or a successful search for berries or fruits, one was rewarded with a good meal.

Eating is joie de vivre when we consciously choose healthy foods, learn again to consciously appreciate high-quality food and take the necessary time to eat.

4. Wrong nutrition psychology - cause

The causes of incorrect nutritional psychology are quickly explained.

It is the fast pace of life in the 21st century, advancing mechanization and social media.

Today’s man seeks more and more his happiness in consumption and less and less in his own abilities, creativity and nature.

In doing so, he tries to consume faster and faster and more and more, even while eating.

At the same time, so-called multitasking is neither effective nor healthy.
